On the battlefield Eowyn is attacked by the Lord of the Nazgul (the Black Riders). She also carries along Merry, who was ordered to remain in Rohan. Eowyn, daughter of Theoden, rides with the riders disguised as a man. The riders of Rohan reach Minas Tirith and war with the Mordor army. Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas (and about 40 Rangers from the North) ride through the Paths Of The Dead, and Aragorn calls The Dead forth to fulfil an oath they had broken in Isildur's time. The third book is as follows:Rohan musters its troops and begins the long ride to Minas Tirith, which is under seige by a massive array of orcs, men, and trolls, all aligned to Sauron. Shelob attacks and poisons Frodo and he gets captured by orcs, after Sam takes Sting (his sword), the phial of Galadriel, and the Ring. That's basically the second book. They meet with Faramir, brother of Boromir, and then head up a long stairway to Cirith Ungol, where Smeagol betrays them and makes a deal with Shelob, a giant evil spider, in order to get the Ring back from Frodo. Merry becomes a squire of Theoden, the King of Rohan.Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam "meet up" with Smeagol (Gollum) and then journey towards Mordor. At Isengard Gandalf strips Sauruman of his powers, and then ride off to Minas Tirith with Pippin. Oh, and A, G & L meet up with Gandalf before they go to Isengard (Orthanc). Meanwhile, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas have met up with the riders of Rohan and make their way to meet with the ruler of Rohan, who then all eventually make their way to Orthanc to meet up with Merry and Pippin. The ents decide to go attack Orthanc and do. Merry and Pippen escape when the orcs are killed by a group of knights from Rohan, and they disappear into the woods of Fangorn, where they meet Treebeard, an Ent. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli take up on foot to get them back. So they called him Gollum, and cursed him, and told him to go far away andhis grandmother, desiring peace, expelled him from the family and turned him out of her hole.įree version follows.*** WARNING! SPOILERS! ***Merry and Pippen are captured by the orcs, who are racing to get them back to Sauruman at Orthanc. He took to thieving, and going about muttering to himself, and gurgling in his throat. It is not to be wondered at that he became very unpopular and was shunned (when visible) by all his relations. The ring had given him power according to his stature. He became sharp-eyed and keen-eared for all that washurtful. He was very pleased with his discovery and he concealed it and he used it to find out secrets, and he put his knowledge to crooked and malicious uses. But SmÊagol returned alone and he found that none of his family could see him, when he was wearing the ring. He was interested in roots and beginnings he dived into deep pools he burrowed under trees and growing plants he tunnelled into green mounds and he ceased to look up at the hill-tops, or the leaves on trees, or the flowers opening in the air: his head and his eyes were downward.'No one ever found out what had become of Deal he was murdered far from home, and his body was cunningly hidden. The most inquisitive and curious-minded of that family was called SmÊagol. There was among them a family of high repute, for it was large and wealthier than most, and it was ruled by a grandmotherof the folk, stern and wise in old lore, such as they had. I guess they were of hobbit-kind akin to the fathers of the fathers of the Stoors, for they loved the River, and often swam in it, or made little boats of reeds. From Fellowship of the Ring:quote:'Long after, but still very long ago, there lived by the banks of the Great River on the edge of Wilderland a clever-handed and quiet-footed little people. While I can see the obvious parallels, then, between Bilbo and Gollum, both of which find the Ring and come from a similar line, I still feel that making Gollum a Hobbit detracts from the legacy more than it adds to it.Edit: Ah, I have answered my own question. This would account for why he looks physically different, and I do recall, for some reason, a book or film image depicting Gollum killing another member of his species, suggesting that his appearance is not simply a side-effect of the Ring. However, zenwolf later pointed out a quote from here: this, it sounds like Gollum (Smeagol Gollum, to be precise) was a Stoorish Hobbit. If this is true, I'm very annoyed. Rather than find the exact passages from the books, however, I decided I'd pose the question to people better versed in Middle Earth lore than I.To my recollection, Gollum was of a "Hobbit-like peoples", but not actually a Hobbit. ![]() Discussing the subject in #arsclan, where all things are perpetually fun, CanSpice pointed out that lists Gollum as being a Hobbit, and I refuse to believe this.
